Opposition political leaders in Malawi continues to force government to adopt a resolution passed by the national assembly to have clerk of parliament Matilda Katopola removed from her office following fraud charges leveled against her.
The Malawi parliament Thursday passed a resolution that Katopola be fired from her position as she dubiously awarded a contract to her company Monics Trends to supply printing services to the national assembly.
Some opposition members of parliament say they would be surprised if government allows the fired clerk to continue working.
This they say would be interpreted that authorities are promoting corruption and bribery among public officers.
Meanwhile, the Malawi government has declared that it will implement parliament’s decision arguing parliament has no power to fire and hire public servants.
The resistance by government comes despite an earlier recommendation by the parliamentary service commission that Katopola be sacked.
In the meantime, Friday Jumbe spokesman on financial matters for the former ruling United Democratic Front UDF said it is up to government to respect parliament’s decision on the matter.
